This is a classic trail for bikers of Messina and its province.
Fort Campone is located 500 meters above sea level in the heart of Peloritani, between Musolino and the hilltop village of Calvaruso. The fort, along with Puntal Ferraro, is among the highest fortifications of the Strait of Messina and remains one of the best preserved example. The fort is open on weekends and it is worth a visit. Unfortunately, the fort is also famous for the mafia murder of a 17 years-old girl, named Graziella Campagna, whose dead body was found in the fort.
To get to fort Campone is very simple: we start from our base in a southerly direction, we take the Viale Giostra and begin to climb a paved road. At the second roundabout, we turn left and continue towards San Rizzo hills.
Once at the Quattrostrade, the famous crossroads, we go up towards Dinnamare. When we arrive at Musolino we find a sign “Campone 6km” and continue through a steep but wide downhill road that will take us to Portella Rondine.
We turn right and continue riding up and down on a path bordered by acacia trees, pines and eucalyptus until we arrive at a forest of chestnut trees. After a few kilometers of exciting ups and downs and breathing fresh air we arrive at destination.
